What’s the saying? Every beginning is hard. But it doesn’t have to be. If you are a sewing beginner and want or need to get to grips with the material first, it is always advisable to start with a few simple exercises. These combine several advantages: they explain how a sewing machine works, show you which hand movements are necessary and train your skills in a playful way. Different beginner’s exercises can be carried out at different levels of difficulty, thus increasing your knowledge bit by bit. We will tell you here which simple exercises are particularly recommended for beginners.

The dishtowel exercise

Surely you have an old tea towel with a check pattern at home, which you can do without. This piece of fabric is ideal for taking your first steps with the sewing machine. Use the pattern of the cloth to “trace” different lines.

Try out different stitch types and sizes and also try to sew sometimes faster, sometimes slower. In the course of time you should also make sure that your movements become more and more fluid. Try to stop as little as possible when sewing a straight line.

The paper exercise

Straight lines are the basis. Now it continues with wavy and zigzag lines. All you need is a piece of paper (alternatively a piece of fabric) and a felt-tip pen. Draw different lines on the paper with the pen and then place it on your work surface. Now try again to follow the different lines with the sewing machine needle. Again, try to stop as little as possible and develop a flowing and even sewing style.

The material exercise

When the basic things are mastered, the next step is to train the handling of different types of material. This is especially important if you intend to sew garments. While some fabrics are rather static, others have a high elasticity. These properties are very important and must be taken into account when sewing.

How to practice the handling of different materials:

Collect as many different scraps of fabric as possible (a good opportunity to clean out the wardrobe again)
Pay special attention to very elastic fabrics (these are often used to make clothing such as T-shirts and dresses)

Tip: While experimenting, you can also practice cleaning different fabrics. The classic zigzag stitch is used here. If this is done thoroughly and evenly, the edge of the fabric is perfectly neatened and can no longer “run dry” (= pulling threads).

The Distance Exercise

Keeping distances is an important skill that you as a sewing fan must master. Especially when keeping the seam allowance, it is important that the distance is always the same. To learn this, it is good to make several seams on a piece of fabric and try to arrange them as parallel as possible. The best way to do this is to orientate yourself on the edge of the fabric when sewing the first seam and look at the adjacent seam for each subsequent seam.

Advantages and disadvantages of the exercises for sewing machine beginners

  • ideal for starters
  • promote creativity and safety when sewing
  • require patience when practising

The first practical exercise

You cannot wait any longer and want to finally create a real product with your sewing machine? Small cushions that are completely closed are the perfect starter project. The most important thing here is to make straight and even seams and to work as cleanly as possible. After you have sewn three sides, the filling, for example cotton wool, can be used. Then the cushion can be closed completely. Zippers or button strips are much more practical, but still too heavy for you as a beginner. The small pillow that you have sewn can be used as a pin cushion, for example. Children will also be happy if they can use it to decorate their doll’s pram.

Tip: If you really want to sew a washable pillowcase, you should try a hotel clasp as a beginner. This ensures that the pillowcase is folded into each other and the pillow cannot come out.

It is perfectly normal that your first attempts at walking with the sewing machine will be unsafe and bumpy. It is therefore all the more important that you approach it with different exercises and try out what you are good at and where there is still some catching up to do. The exercises are also a good opportunity to get to know your sewing machine even better. Feel free to experiment with it, try out different settings and stitches and see how they affect different types of fabric. This is the only way to develop the necessary feeling and become better and better over time.
