Especially those who work with a sewing machine know that the correct threading of the thread is quite important for a relaxed work and an optimal end result. But especially beginners often find it a little difficult to thread the thread, because a little skill is required. Because unlike conventional sewing needles, a lot more has to be paid attention to with a sewing machine.

Threading the thread correctly in the sewing machine – the 4 work steps

First you should pull the thread through the small hole of the still empty bobbin so far that it protrudes about 1 cm.

Then proceed as follows:

  • Winding the lower thread
  • Inserting the lower thread spool
  • Threading the upper thread
  • Retrieving the bottom thread

Winding the lower thread

first, the empty yarn spool is taken and the yarn from the upper yarn spool is fed through the openings provided from below
then the bobbin is placed on the track winder, which is located in the upper part of the sewing machine
this track winder together with the still empty spool is now folded to the right until it is noticeably engaged
finally, the machine can be started by the foot pedal and the yarn of the upper bobbin is now automatically wound onto the bobbin for the underthread

hold the end of the thread tightly while the bobbin is placed on the track winder

Inserting the lower thread spool

both the bobbin and the capsule are taken in one hand each
now the bobbin is inserted into the capsule, whereby the thread is guided through the opening on the top of the capsule
now the small groove above the housing for the bobbin thread is exposed by turning the handwheel
the small capsule with the thread reel is now held by the small hand lever on the back and inserted with the metal pin pointing upwards until a clear click is heard

To check whether the thread tension is optimal, if the thread can be unwound slowly with slow shaking. If this does not work, the thread tension is too tight and the thread will tear easily when sewing.
If you take the thread sticking out at the top and the bobbin in the capsule moves too fast, this means that the thread tension is too loose and would produce untidy seams.

Threading the upper thread

first of all, the corresponding reel of yarn is placed on the reel holder
then the thread is pulled slightly, i.e. unwound from the reel, in order to guide it towards the upper thread tensioner according to the marked thread guide
when the upper thread tensioner is noticeably engaged, the thread is guided by the guide lever, which is located above the needle, and finally guided through the eye of the needle from the front

It is always important to follow the prescribed thread guide of the respective machine. This is usually marked clearly visible on the sewing machine.

Raising the lower thread

first the handwheel is turned in its own direction so that the needle is lowered
the needle must move down completely once to pick up the bobbin thread
while slowly pulling back the needle, a loop has formed between the upper and lower thread, which can be pulled out slowly until the lower thread can be gripped
finally, both threads are pulled taut and placed backwards on the conveyor

If the loop is not so easy to grasp, you can carefully drive a pair of scissors into the loop and gently pull it out to reach for the ends of the thread.
