Whether a seam is straight or rather untidy and perhaps even crooked, depends not least on the correct setting of the sewing machine. Because only if the machine is set optimally, the thread underneath the seam will not break and the seam itself will look like a professional seam.
How to adjust the sewing machine correctly
Even before starting the actual sewing work, some things on the sewing machine must be checked and, if necessary, readjusted.
That includes:
- Threading the upper and lower thread correctly
- Pull up bobbin thread
- Set straight seam and seam pressure
- Setting the stitch length
- Setting the thread tension
Once the first points have been completed and the desired stitch length set directly on the machine, the main thing is to set the thread tension correctly so that the thread does not break when sewing and you have to start all over again.
Tip: The thread tension can usually also be adjusted on the sewing machine.
But especially for a sewing beginner it is not always clear whether this has been chosen optimally.

Check thread tension
It is best to check how the seam looks like on a piece of fabric. This usually has the advantage that you can see immediately which thread is not optimally adjusted.
Then adjust the thread tension by means of a tension regulator or adjusting wheel.
If the seam is too loose, you can see the thread when pulling the fabric apart
If the thread tension is set too tight, the thread breaks
If the upper thread is visible on the back, the upper thread tension is set too loosely.
if the lower thread is visible on the front, the lower thread tension is set too loosely.
Setting the lower thread position correctly
Especially on older machines, the looper thread tension must often be set separately. However, this does not necessarily have to be a disadvantage.
This can be recognised by the bobbin case in which the bobbin with the looper thread is located.
If the bobbin thread and its tension must be adjusted by means of the adjusting screw on the bobbin case, this should only be done in small steps.

In addition to these procedures, there are also important prerequisites that should be considered if you want to adjust the sewing machine correctly:
- The sewing machine should first of all be clean. This means that there should also be no more lint or fabric remnants in the spaces between or on the needle or thread.
- Furthermore, the machine should always be well oiled.
- The needle itself should not be broken or bent.
- The yarn itself should not be of inferior quality, as this generally tends to tear faster.
